Gandhi wins bronze for Dandy

A life-sized Mahatma Gandhi could stand in Dandenong’s Indian Cultural Precinct.

Greater Dandenong Council is seeking public feedback on a Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria proposal to install a bronze statue of the pacifist opposite the Dandenong Railway Station.

The survey will ask about support for the statue and whether there is support for monuments of other historical figures or icons to reinforce the precinct as the heart of Melbourne’s Indian and subcontinent culture.

A tribute to one of India’s most well-known and revered historical figures could include a series of plaques describing Gandhi’s life and philosophy.

In Australia, Canberra and Brisbane are already home to life-sized Gandhi statues.

Artist Julian Clavijo recently painted a temporary mural of Gandhi on a former substation within the Indian Cultural Precinct.

The survey closes on Thursday 7 June and can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/GandhiSurvey.
