The award-winning Greater Dandenong Australia Day Festival is back in 2020.
Now in its 59th year, the Australia Day event at Dandenong Park is a celebration of community and diversity and recognises the different things Australia Day means to different people.
This year the festival will take on a beach theme, with a special sand castle zone. This area will allow the young and young at heart to build sand sculptures and enjoy a true beach experience.
The festival also incorporates the Australia Day Awards.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Councillor Jim Memeti said the day was an opportunity to celebrate what connects the Greater Dandenong community.
“The Australia Day Festival is a celebration of our similarities and our differences,” he said.
“We understand that Australia Day means different things to different people. We also acknowledge this can be a difficult day for some members of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and we are respectful of that.”
More than 11,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations on Sunday 26 January at Dandenong Park.
The all-ages festival will feature live music, circus and magic acts, roving performers, rides (cost between $2 and $6), free family activities and food and market stalls.
The highlight of the event will be the Australia Day fireworks at 9.25pm.
In addition, 50 new citizens will be officially granted Australian citizenship in a ceremony at the Dandenong Civic Centre at 2.00pm on Australia Day.
Noble Park RSL will be hosting Australia Day celebrations on Sunday 26 January, with free entertainment by The Dalton Gang from 12 noon and an official flag raising ceremony at 1.00pm.
The Australia Day Festival will be held on Sunday 26 January from 3pm to 9.30pm at Dandenong Park, Pultney Street Dandenong.
