IN a recent story in this column, I referred to a proposed 20th anniversary reunion of former dressmakers who were employed at Brown’s clothing factory, and to the lasting friendships forged as sewing machines whirred.
Now the dressmakers can proudly claim to all be octogenarians. On April 14 they travelled from their homes to turn back the clock and reminisce about their happy working days.
Distance was no deterrent and they came from as far as Doncaster, Drouin, Beaumaris, and also from Dandenong and Endeavour Hills.
They met at noon at the Pavilion reception rooms, and after lunch, the 11 former workmates chatted for four hours.
Irene Rice (nee Miss Bending), who was one of the primary organisers of the luncheon, said the former workmates were looking forward to a repeat luncheon next year. “It was great to catch up with all our friends,” she said.
A day to celebrate
“It was a day to remember … a day of joy and happiness … gifts, lovely flowers, cards, phone calls, but best of all, it was a day when our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited our home in Dandenong North.”
In these simple heartfelt words Joan Foley, 90, described the exciting occasion of her and her husband Frank’s 70th wedding anniversary, which they celebrated on Anzac Day.
They were married in St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Warrnambool and a reception followed at Dunbar’s restaurant.
Joan is the former Miss Esam, daughter of the late Gordon and Nellie Esam, and Joan’s father and Frank’s father were workmates. Frank is the son of the late James and Jess Foley.
“We were blessed with five children: three sons and two daughters – Margaret, Gary, Maureen, Ken and Michael. We have 17 grandchildren and are very proud also of our great-grandchildren,” Joan said.
Joan used to work in a factory and retired at the age of 60 and her husband retired at 65. Frank also enjoys gardening and Joan is a member of the Lyndale senior citizens club where she has made many friends.
And was there a diamond wedding cake? “Of course,” Joan said. “We shared it with family and friends.”
