Serrated tussock not for DIY: council

Here's trouble: Serrated tussock

GREATER Dandenong Council has warned residents not to try do-it-yourself removal of the prolific and nationally-significant weed serrated tussock.

The Department of Primary Industries recently reported an infestation of the aggressive weed on public land in Greater Dandenong.

Greater Dandenong engineering services director Bruce Rendell said the recent infestation was not on council land but the council would report any weeds of national significance, such as serrated tussock, to the DPI for removal and monitoring.

“Now that serrated tussock has been found within the municipality, staff will be extra vigilant.”

Mr Rendell said residents should not try to remove the weed themselves because it was important to completely remove or kill the plant, and to monitor the site.

Melbourne Water south-east river health manager Anthony Stevens said the authority had reports of serrated outbreaks in the south-east region, but it was not widespread.

“On the back of these reports, we have reminded our maintenance crews to be on alert for the presence of serrated tussock along the waterways we manage.”

To report serrated tussock, call Greater Dandenong Council on 9797 1768 or the DPI on 136 186.
