VPL: Thunder star Sherbon to join rival

By ROY WARD

DANDENONG Thunder star Luke Sherbon looks certain to leave the club after receiving an impressive offer from a rival Victorian Premier League side.

The 26-year-old Welshman starred for the Thunder in the past two seasons, scoring the go-ahead free kick goal in the VPL grand final earlier this year and making the pass which allowed Nate Foster to score the winning goal.

Sherbon also won many supporters off the pitch with his coaching at junior level and his warmth to club supporters and general VPL followers.

But after leading the Thunder to the VPL treble this season, Sherbon was closely courted by several VPL clubs, with South Melbourne and Bentleigh both consistently mentioned as contenders for his signature.

In an email to the Journal, Sherbon said he had received an offer he couldn’t refuse and while he has yet to put pen to paper, admitted he would be leaving the Thunder.

He declined to name his new club as he had not officially signed with them yet.

“I’ve loved every second of my time there but as it stands at the moment I will be leaving the club,” he wrote. “I have been offered a very good coaching job with another VPL team which is really good for my and my family’s future.

“My partner Hannah and myself are expecting our first child in February. I had to think long term and unfortunately with the problem at Dandy and the way things were towards the end of season I couldn’t risk not getting paid every week.”

Sherbon’s exit could be the first of many from the Thunder, who will face the VPL tribunal this Wednesday night after appealing against a 10-match home game ban and severe fine which followed poor crowd behaviour at the VPL grand final with several flares, including a couple of rocket flares, let off from the Thunder’s supporter section.

The Thunder hope they can have their home game ban reduced, allowing them to make some money from home matches in 2013 and y keep a squad strong enough to compete at VPL level.
