Disabled take their place

WALLARA is celebrating International Day of People with a Disability with an art exhibition and concert.
The Dandenong-based support service for adults with a disability ran a Picture This competition for students who participated in its Insight Program.
It asked them to sketch, paint, photograph, or produce a piece of 2D artwork that depicted their interpretation of social inclusion for people with a disability.
The entries will be on display at Drum Theatre, corner Lonsdale and Walker streets, Dandenong, from 26 November to 7 December.
Wallara will announce the winning creations at its annual Concert Spectacular at Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on 2 December, and they will also appear on three of Wallara’s buses.
The night will celebrate social inclusion and showcase the people Wallara supports through a hip-hop routine from Dandenong High School, a modern remake of Alice in Wonderland from Berwick Chisholm TAFE students, and more.
The organisation will also launch its WallaraTV initiative for International Day of People with Disability – a United Nations sanctioned day on 3 December that promotes an understanding of people with disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and wellbeing.
Wallara CEO Phil Hayes-Brown said the TV project was about growing awareness of disability and changing attitudes through sharing clients’ stories on Facebook, You Tube, its website and Channel 31.
“When you visit a disability support service, you don’t expect to see a TV studio opposite reception,” he said.
“And that’s exactly why we decided to do it – because we like challenging perceptions.”
The mini production company also provides training and development opportunities for some of Wallara’s service users.
Wallara supports more than 400 people across 30 sites through community day services, residential and supported accommodation, part-time and full-time employment and training, and workplace opportunities.
Concert Spectacular entry is from 5pm for a 5.30pm start. For tickets or more information call Julie at Wallara reception on 9792 2985 or email jcosgriff@wallara.com.au.
