AUSTRALIA’S peak architectural body has praised a new building at a Dandenong TAFE campus and given its designers an award.
Chisholm Institute’s Building G was presented with a plaque from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) last month after winning the Colorbond Steel Award in the 2006 RAIA Victorian Architecture Awards earlier this year.
The new state-of-the-art training facility was officially opened in July by the Federal Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, Gary Hardgrave, and now represents one of Victoria’s outstanding contemporary educational facilities.
The director of the school of social sciences, Maria Peters, attended the presentation accepting the plaque from BlueScope Steel’s market development manager, George Plionis.
The Colorbond Steel Award recognises the use of flat galvanised sheeting and corrugated Zincalume steel cladding as Building G’s outer skin.
“Building G at Chisholm Institute has four distinctive features that make it memorable,” according to the RAIA award jury citation.
The citation praised the building for the unique uses of polycarbonate, flat galvanised sheeting and corrugate Zincalume steel, developed by Bluescope Steel.
Chisholm’s Facilities Manager, Subhan Ali, said the award and plaque recognised the uniqueness of Building G and the choice and effective use of materials used.
“It’s very satisfying to have this award at this time,” he said.
“It’s nice to complete the project and receive this kind of recognition.”
Mr Ali said more new buildings were in the pipeline.
“We’re now focused on the next big thing for Chisholm, which is the institute’s second centre of excellence – the centre for integrated engineering and science,” he said.
