Bikers warned to not wind up dead

MORE than 50 motorcyclists were injured in collisions in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia in the first four months of this year.
Two of the 52 crashes were fatal, so police are urging riders to take care on and off-road in the area.
There were 10 collisions in the Bunyip State Forest area.
Crime prevention officer Senior Constable Annmarie Logan said the region’s winding roads were popular among recreational motorcycle riders.
“Despite the attraction for riders, these roads or tracks can also be a major hazard,” she said.
“It is important to be aware of the risks before you ride because if you come off your bike, you might not get a second chance.”
Sen Const Logan said loss of control and rider inexperience when braking, turning or riding on uneven surfaces were among the main causes of motorcycle collisions.
She said there were simple safety precautions all road users – not just motorcyclists – could take to reduce the risk:
– Be aware of common road hazards including loose gravel, oil, water, wildlife, ice, snow and potholes;
– Look out for other road users, especially at intersections, when changing lanes or overtaking;
– Riding without sufficient sleep is like riding intoxicated and can impair your judgement and ability to control your bike;
– Adjust your riding to your surroundings;
– Do not cut across double lines;
– Quality riding gear is essential including solid boots, a well-fitting and approved helmet, scratch-free visors and quality gloves; and
– When off-road riding, make sure someone knows where you are going and an estimated return time.
