Greater Dandenong residents have been told to beware toxic smoke from a fire at a fibreglass-making factory in Dandenong South this afternoon.

Nine crews of 40 CFA firefighters extinguished the fire at the GR Plastics factory in Kimberly Road within 30 minutes, containing it to a 400 square-metre manufacturing section.

Senior Station Officer Darren Padgett, the fire’s incident controller, said the fire started in a spray booth about 3.50pm, causing extensive smoke damage within the building.

He said the fire was not suspicious.

The large black plumes of smoke initially reported to the CFA were gone by 4pm but as late as 4.48pm, the CFA has issued an advice warning to nearby residents to stay indoors.

The warning applied to residents in Dandenong, Dandenong South, Hampton Park, Keysborough, Eumemmerring, Lynbrook and Bangholme.
