WRECKERS have moved in on the former Dandenong Library.
Workers started dismantling the old Stuart Street library last week.
The task is expected to be completed by the end of July.
Once the building is demolished, the area will be converted into a temporary carpark for shoppers at Dandenong Market.
Mayor Sean O’Reilly said access to the former Clow Street building and YStop would not be hindered during the demolition period.
The next municipal building to be demolished will the former Springvale council offices on Springvale Road.
Wreckers will move in on 20 July. The demolition is expected to take approximately eight weeks.
Once the building is demolished, temporary fencing will remain, new temporary paths will be created and the uncovered earth will be seeded with grass.
Mr O’Reilly said the council was making sure that the two demolitions were being carried out with the community’s safety in mind.
“This is also an iconic moment in history, whereby two of our municipal buildings, which have served the community well, are changing the landscape of our environment,“ he said.
A master plan has been created for the Springvale site and includes a new library and community facilities.
