Bin stickers drive safety message

Greater Dandenong residents can make streets safer through stickers on their wheelie bins.
The Australian Road Safety Federation (ARSF) has produced large stickers with images of children stepping towards the road and speed limit signs.
They’re designed to provide motorists with a strong visual road safety reminder.
The images are based on research that found that signs depicting motion resulted in faster reaction times and increased vigilance, which could ultimately lead to faster stopping times.
ARSF CEO Russell White said 67 pedestrians were killed on Australian roads between January and May this year, putting the country on track to equal or exceed the 165 pedestrian fatalities recorded last year.
“The Life Saving sticker campaign provides a real-time reminder to motorists to reduce their speed,” he said.
“If someone is exceeding the speed limit, we hope these stickers will prompt them to immediately slow down.
“Even small changes in vehicle speed can have a dramatic impact on stopping distances.”
Mr White said more than 82 per cent of this year’s fatalities occurred on week days.
“Our research tells us that for every fatality, there is between 20 and 30 injuries,” he said.
The stickers are $10 each, plus postage. Call 1300 723 843 or email info@australianroadsafetyfoundation.com.
