Cannons fire into strong wind

TAC Cup – round 12
A WORRISOME wind left the Stingrays chasing all day against Calder Cannons.
Gale-force winds at the notorious Highgate Reserve beset both sides, with the Cannons able to do the previously impossible – kick multiple goals into the wind in the final term to run out 29-point victors.
Dandenong kicked four goals in the final term, with Jack Wheeler (2 goals) leading the way, but was at Calder’s mercy as the Cannons fired three of their own to clinch the victory.
Hard-nut Alex Harnett was best afield after playing the majority of the match with a broken hand. Also impressing were Tom Glen, stand-in captain Jake Wilson and first-gamer Jordan Rouse.
“Our first quarter was as good of a first quarter we’ve played all year – playing into the breeze,” Stingrays coach Craig Black said.
“I think we were still a chance at three-quarter-time.
“We were five goals down, but it was a pretty strong breeze and they took the momentum away from us – in the last quarter they kicked three goals into the breeze – and it was a bit disappointing in the end.”
Falling back into the logjam – with teams from third to seventh on 24 points – the sixth placed Stingrays will face Murray Bushrangers at home on Saturday from 1pm.
SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Division 2 – round 10
A woeful day beset Springvale Districts as the home side conceded a 58-point loss to Oakleigh District. Gavin Vassallo, Jackson Bolch and David Monaghan were the best of the Demons bunch.
Division 3 – round 11
Lyndale snared the points in the cross-town showdown against Dandenong, taking a 10.13 (73) to 7.5 (47) victory. A five-goal third term pushed Lyndale ahead with Trevor Kumetaitis and Trent Day (2 goals each) leading the charge. Brodie O’Laughlin (2 goals) was Dandenong’s best alongside Stephen Young and Rob Mackwell.
Sandown impressed against league heavyweights Carrum Patterson Lakes, but ran out of puff in the final term. The Lions roared past the Cobras to steal a 15-point win with Jason Toan (2 goals), John Frenken and Matt Menzies the best for Sandown.

Division 2 – round 11
BRAVELY fighting til the final siren, St John’s could not halt wayward Old Eltham Collegians in the 15-point loss. Darryn O’Connor and Kane Arnold led the JOCs charge, but the visitors were unable to halt the old boys’ charge. Sitting sixth in Division 2, St John’s can rebound this weekend against Ivanhoe at home.
