TAKING the next step as an international basketballer, Dandenong Rangers’ import Daequon Montreal has signed on the dotted line to become an NBL player.
New York born Montreal, 26, who played college basketball for Boise State University, has signed his inaugural National Basketball League (NBL) contract and will play for the Adelaide 36ers in the upcoming season.
The 2.032 metre (that’s six-foot, eight-inches in old money) guard first drew attention of national recruiters with his 46-point domination of last year’s SEABL grand final win over Mt Gambier.
He’s currently averaging 23 points and seven rebounds a game for the Rangers, who sit on top of the SEABL East conference with two rounds left in the SEABL season before play-offs.
Round 19
A MIXED weekend in Tasmania greeted both Dandenong teams as they split the ledger with the home sides.
The Dandenong men knocked off Hobart convincingly 104-69 on Friday night, led by Daequon Montreal (28 points, 12 rebounds) while on Saturday night North West Tasmania claimed the points in a 93-71 win over the Rangers.
A double-double from Tony Lewis (23 points, 10 rebounds) wasn’t enough to guide the result for Dandenong.
The women were knocked off by Hobart 80-83 on Friday night as WNBL star Cayla Francis (27 points, 15 rebounds) excelled for the Chargers.
Dandenong was led ably by Clare Papavs (24 points, 7 rebounds) and Lauren Scherf (20 points, 21 rebounds) – with the young centre reeling in her first 20-and-20 haul in her SEABL career.
Anderson’s charges bounced back on Saturday to take a 69-82 win over Hobart – led by Papavs (22 points) and Scherf (17 points, 12 rebounds) again while Amelia Todhunter (19 points) also featured in the victory.
Both sides remain atop their respective SEABL East Conference ladders with the last round of the home-and-away season starting on Saturday. The Rangers men face Sandringham at home on Saturday before an away fixture for both sides against Nunawading to round out the regular season.
