AN item in this column on June 17
about the origin of street names piqued the curiosity of Mitchell Rabot,
of Mihan Street, Noble Park.
He asks: “Can anyone shed any light
on who Mihan Street is named after and what is the significance of such a
name? Is the street named after a pioneer? Was he or she a former
charity worker of yesteryear?”
Mitchell is becoming something of a
pioneer himself, as he has lived in the Noble Park area for 45 years. “I
have also lived in Buckley Street and Parramatta Crescent in Noble
Park, and I am trying to highlight these locations in a story about
migrants,” he said.

Golden year for historical society
This year could be described as one
of continuing celebration by Dandenong and District Historical Society,
which is holding a series of events to mark its 50th anniversary. On
Saturday, June 15 a 50th anniversary lunch was held at the Dandenong
Club, with guests including Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long,
councillors John Kelly and Matthew Kirwan and chief executive officer
John Bennie. A highlight was the presentation of a cheque to society
president Chris Keys by Kevin Shannahan, president of the Dandenong
Club, which has sponsored the society for many years.
The society will stage an exhibition titled Then and Now 1963-2013.It will be opened by Cr Long at a cocktail party on Friday, September 19, and run until October 6.
The help of volunteers is greatly
appreciated at the society’s rooms at the Houlahan Centre, 186 Foster
