GREATER Dandenong councillor Peter Brown believes he may have struck upon a catchy name for the under-construction Municipal Building Project in Dandenong.
In a pointed missive to fellow councillors and chief executive John Bennie, Cr Brown – who with Cr Maria Sampey was the subject of a confidential council probe – suggested The Kremlin.
He said the “new big red council building” was “a place in which secret investigations can be undertaken by elected officials and their staff into the actions of other elected officials with whose work they disagree and do all they can in their power to keep the reports secret”.
He signed off the email: “Comrade Brown”.
Some have dubbed the site – which will be home to the state’s busiest library, cafes and a 30,000-square-metre public square – as the “Federation Square of the south-east”.
A Journal reader last week suggested it looked like the doomed luxury liner the Costa Concordia.
Cr Brown, who said he got a tetchy response from some of his colleagues, said he had a “great sense of pride” when he recently inspected the project.
“It’s going to be a great asset to the community and add to the architectural improvement in Dandenong,” he said.
“Considering the new Tax Office building and the Government Services building nearby, it’s going to be a lively area.
“I think The Kremlin might stick for the wrong reasons.”
