Greater Dandenong will soon be home to a river red gum with a special place in history.
The Victoria Day Council offered Greater Dandenong Council a sapling from the Separation Tree.
Victorians gathered at the gum in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens on 15 November 1850 to celebrate news that the state would separate from New South Wales.
The tree is estimated to be more than 400 years old but is dying following vandalism attacks.
Saplings from its seed were propagated and saplings are now being distributed around Victoria.
The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid will accept the plant on behalf of the mayor on Friday 17 November.
She said the council hadn’t determined where it would be planted yet, and that this decision would be made in consultation with the parks team.
