Three men arrested in fireworks raids

Arson and Explosives Squad detectives have arrested three men and seized three tonnes of illegal fireworks in raids in the South-East.
They raided five homes, in Dandenong, Springvale, Pakenham and Narre Warren South, on the morning of Thursday 30 November.
Police also executed warrants at a storage facility and a vehicle rental premises, both in Dandenong South.
They seized about three tonnes of illegal fireworks with help from WorkSafe, plus an imitation firearm, an air rifle and a samurai sword.
They arrested three 41-year-old men from Narre Warren, Pakenham and Springvale.
Detective Inspector Michael Roberts from the Arson and Explosives Squad said the operation was incredibly important in the lead-up to the festive and bushfire seasons.

Police raided several addresses during the swoop.

“The use of fireworks is illegal and can be highly dangerous, and being able to disrupt their distribution today through these arrests and seizures is a great result for the community,” he said.
“Fireworks are volatile items that pose a major health and safety risk to the community.
“The possession and use of illegal fireworks can result in injury, death and destruction of property.
“Something that might seem harmless or a bit of fun can, and often does, end in injury or the destruction of property.”
Det Insp Roberts said people died from injuries inflicted by illegal fireworks.
“A bushfire sparked by a firework could have catastrophic consequences as it has the potential the destroy homes, communities and human life,” he said.
“I really encourage people to think twice when it comes to illegal fireworks – this risk just isn’t worth it.
“I’d also ask people to have strong discussions with anyone they know who is planning to buy or use illegal fireworks, especially over the coming months.
“There’s no excuse for this behaviour and no reason anyone in the community should find it acceptable.”
Victoria Police will take action against anyone using illegal fireworks, which are considered explosives under the Crimes Act.
Offenders can be charged with a criminal offence for possessing an explosive, jailed for up to five years and fined thousands of dollars.
