1. Consumer Affairs Victoria recommends people carefully check that electric blankets, hot water bottles and other winter items are in good condition and have not been recalled. Take note of Energy Safe Victoria’s information for Vulcan or Pyrox Heritage gas heater owners. These need to have carbon monoxide levels tested.
2. Use hot tap water and not boiling water to fill hot water bottles and replace them when they start to look cracked or worn. Only buy wheat bags or other heat packs that come with clear heating instructions. Overheating a wheat bag can cause the bag to ignite and start a fire.
3. Candles should be extinguished when leaving the room or before going to sleep, says Consumer Affairs Victoria, and should be kept away from curtains, bedding and clothing.
