SEABL: Strong defence gives Dandenong an assist

By Roy Ward

DANDENONG Rangers women pressed their way to a thrashing of Albury-Wodonga at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night.

After struggling to break free of the Lady Bandits in the opening term the Rangers extended their defence to three-quarter court and stormed away to a 95-56 win.

Rangers guard Amelia Todhunter led all scorers with 22 points and nine rebounds while Faith Probst had 15 points and Hope Terdich 14 points.

Rachelle Matthys led the Lady Bandits with 11 points while 15-year-old Montana Farrah-Seaton scored 10 points in limited minutes.

Rangers coach Larissa Anderson said her side had to keep finding transition points via their defence. “We have so many smart and athletic players that we need to make use of them on defence. The girls are starting to see how it can work for us.”

Anderson said she was happy with the victory margin but wanted her side to maintain their defensive intensity.

“Defence is the key for us especially with players out. We are a defensive-minded team and we have to keep with that and use it to get into transition.”

The Rangers play Hobart at Dandenong Stadium at 5.30pm this Saturday.

SEABL East women ladder: Dandenong 17 wins, 4 losses, 131.59; Geelong 16-4, 113.48; Bendigo 12-8, 106.49; Sandringham 9-11, 102.53; Canberra 7-14, 93.52; Brisbane 6-14, 84.12; Frankston 3-17, 88.83.
