How not to catch a thief

By Shaun Inguanzo
A MOTORIST who tried to mow down an armed robber after witnessing him commit a crime has prompted police to discourage others from doing the same.
On 13 July at 12.20pm, a man walked in to the Noble Park post office and asked a staff member for change.
Police said that when the staff member opened the till the man produced a large knife and threatened the staff member.
The man leant over and grabbed cash from the till.
Police said the staff member then pursued the thief, who ran out of the store.
But a motorist in a four-wheel-drive who had witnessed the event drove on to the footpath and attempted to strike the armed robber with the vehicle.
Police said the motorist was successful, but that the impact was not enough to stop the thief from running away.
Despite the best intentions of the driver, Dandenong Police this week urged witnesses to contact police and to avoid attempting to pursue or subdue a criminal.
