Scarf fashion all wrapped up

HOW to wear a scarf from the playground to the boardroom was the question on the minds of women who gathered for a workshop at Madina Fashion in Dandenong during Refugee Week.
Shop owner Shila Navabi demonstrated special techniques to help women create unique, modern looks with scarves.
The workshop was a joint project between Madina Fashion and the Springvale Learning and Activities Centre.
Manager of the Springvale Learning and Activities Centre Elena Sheldon said that, unfortunately, many women experienced discrimination over their desire to wear a hijab at work.
“This workshop was a great opportunity to experiment with fashion.
“I probably would never consider shopping for clothes in cultural shops but I have to admit that this idea of a workshop and bringing together women of all backgrounds changed my mind.
“It helped me open my mind and do some research.
“I can definitely see the potential of Islamic fashion for a lot of women.
“I can see some of the hijab styles fitting perfectly in the office or corporate board room.”
Future partnership projects between the SLAC and Madina Fashion will include more fashion workshops, plus small business management classes and mentoring for local women in small business.
“Running a small business is very challenging, it is 24/7 commitment and often leaves no time for us to stop, reflect, analyse and properly plan for the future.
“Pop up classes run by SLAC in our shops will be a great opportunity for me and other women to improve their small businesses,” said Shila Navabi, the owner of Madina Fashion.
