Police will speak to Dandenong’s Indian community to increase its understanding of their work.
The Victoria Police forum will be among several held across Melbourne in coming weeks in partnership with the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV), Federation of Indian Origin Multi-faith Organisation, Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha and Sankat Mochan Samiti.
Acting Superintendent Darren Cooper said the events provided an opportunity to have a two-way conversation and inform the community about issues that matter.
“We know that people are concerned about a number of issues – such as drugs, family violence, mental health and missing persons – but they may not have the means to learn more about it,” he said.
“These forums are a way for people to speak to their local police and learn more about the processes involved in reporting and investigating these crimes or incidents.”
Expert and specialist police such as family violence advisors and the missing persons unit will speak.
“We know that to effectively engage with the community, we need to go out and meet in familiar and welcoming settings so that people feel comfortable in having a conversation,” Act Supt Cooper said.
The Dandenong forum will take place at the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, 3/85 Foster Street, Dandenong, from 7pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday 7 December.
