Volunteers clean up wetlands

By Bridget Cook
CLEAN up Australia Day was successful in the City of Greater Dandenong last weekend with hundreds of residents joining the fight to keep the city clean. The Greater Dandenong Environment Group organised a clean up site at the Dandenong Wetlands last Sunday.
Group leader Judith Sice said that the wetlands were quite popular.
“It is a lovely park and is continuing to be developed.
“Because of the basketball courts being close and the increasing use of the wetlands, there is quite a lot of litter.”
She said the aim of the day was to clean up the wetlands, and encourage those who use it to keep it clean.
She said the group had a good turnout.
“It seems to have lost its momentum, it’s quite disgusting that people seem not to care,” she said.
“This year was a great opportunity for those living in Greater Dandenong to make their community a cleaner and safer place to live.”
Clean up Australia provided all those involved with a clean up day kit, which included bags, gloves, an optional sharps container and a paper kit.
