AFL Victoria football operations manager John Hook has demanded that his Queensland counterparts show the TAC Cup competition more respect after the goal-umpiring debacle at Carrara on Saturday.
Hook, who was fuming about a series of errors made by the inexperienced goal-umpires, revealed that the video footage of the game would be sent to AFLQ officials as a not-so-subtle wake-up call.
One of the most blatant errors occurred when a Stingrays player kicked a goal off the ground, only for the shot to be recorded as a rushed behind.
According to Hook, the goal umpire is believed to have been following the rules applied in a local women’s competition, where soccer-style goals are disallowed.
“We’re going to send up the vision, because there were a number of errors made, so the QAFL needs to have a look at those to ensure that this competition is given the respect it deserves,” Hook said.
“We understand that people have to learn, but this is the premier under-age competition in Australia, and the importance of this level of footy should be replicated in the standard of umpires who are allocated to it.”
