THE pressure is building on the Southern Stars to win some points in the State League One competition with the end of the season fast approaching and the relegation zone looming.
The Stars are a game behind the pack in last place and did themselves no favours on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to ladder leader, and Premier League-bound, Northcote City. Played at Ross Reserve, the home side was on the back foot from the outset thanks to two early Northcote goals. The scoreline remained 2-0 to the half-time break but the visitors added another two before the end of the game to seal a miserable day for the Stars.
The Springvale White Eagles are in similar danger to the Stars, just one point clear of relegation after going down 3-2 to Bentleigh Greens on Saturday.
Bentleigh is another club likely to be playing Premier League next year but the White Eagles matched it with the Greens, holding a 2-1 half-time lead thanks to goals from Grujo Mrdic and Dominic D’Angelo.
But Nicholas Harrhy landed a hat-trick for the Greens, ensuring the Eagles would remain in the battle to stay afloat in the division for at least another week.
Elsewhere, Dandenong City defeated Morwell Pegasus 3-1 in State League Two South East action, Heatherton United drew 2-2 with Kingston City and South Springvale went down 1-0 to Kingston City.
Noble Park United stayed in the hunt for a promotion spot from State League Three South East with a commanding 5-2 win against North Caulfield, while Springvale City stumbled in its quest to keep up with United, recording a 3-3 draw with bottom side Sandringham City.
