Tennis Victoria: Dingley Dingoes a contender

DINGLEY captain Daniel Wendler is confident his side has the ability to go one better and make the Tennis Victoria Premier League grand final when the new season starts on March 1.

The Dingoes men finished third last season but with Matt Carroll, Rob Phillips and Wendler returning from last season’s team joined by Scott McNamara, Cory Phillips, Jacob Scott, Samuel Thompson and Anthony Zafiris, the team looks capable of pressing for the title.

Wendler said the Dingoes had a good squad. “We are looking really good,” he said.

“We have a couple of old faces from the Asia Pacific League and last year’s Premier League who have stayed loyal to us and a couple of players we have nabbed from Kooyong.

“The team is a little older this season but we have some good strong heads. I think we can do really well.”

Wendler said his side this season was better suited to playing in the team-based Premier League competition.

“We have selected a team of guys who are there for the right reasons, guys who enjoy and excel with a team environment,” he said. “In previous years we have probably had guys who are more individual based players.

“In this league it’s not every man for himself like in a tournament — you need guys who want to play for each other.”

Waverley will also field a men’s team in the Premier League with Aaron Leeder-Chard leading the side which also includes Aaron Addison, Julian Arnold, Daniel Ferretti, Matthew Nickels and Nima Roshan.

The TV Premier League has a men’s and a women’s competition with matches played either on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons. The winning men’s and women’s teams get $4000 prizemoney while the runner-up teams receive $1000. —Roy Ward

Dingley Tennis Club will host a super round of the Premier League, in which all teams play at the same venue at the same time, on March 15 with matches starting at 7pm.
