Labor accuses Labor over Saigon Square

Labor member and sitting councillor Peter Brown has taken a swipe at Isaacs federal Labor MP Mark Dreyfus, accusing him of supporting electoral opponents.

Cr Brown, like fellow councillors Roz Blades (ALP), Youhorn Chea (ALP), Yvonne Herring and Maria Sampey, have been ’punished’ by a ’’We the People’’ campaign for voting down Saigon Square as a name for a public space in Springvale this year.

Cr Brown last week accused Mr Dreyfus of supporting pro-Saigon Square candidates “running to defeat sitting Labor candidates”.

He said he had complained to Mr Dreyfus’ office in June for photocopying community surveys for Cr Loi Truong.

A spokeswoman for Mr Dreyfus said the material was not targeting other councillors, nor had any reference to Saigon Square.

“It was just a community survey for a local councillor.” she said. ”We assisted him as we would any individual or community group. I’m not sure what [Cr Brown’s] on about – we’re not engaged in the campaign.’’
