Premier Cricket: Panthers in narrow win

DANDENONG Panthers import Steven Mullaney proved a match-winner in their clash with Prahran at Toorak Park on Saturday.

Mullaney made 34 off 50 balls as the Panthers made an indifferent 189. He took 4-32 off 10 overs as the Panthers kept the True Blues to 9-187 from 50 overs to sneak away with a win.

The English all-rounder’s performance was his best since arriving at the club and supports the high praise he earned from Panthers captain Darren Pattinson after the two had played together in English County cricket.

While Mullaney caught plenty of attention on Saturday, he wasn’t the only Panther to play a key role. No. 3 batsman Peter Sweeney made 41 and vice-captain Tom Donnell 35.

Pattinson also showed solid form with the ball, taking 2-44 from 10 overs. James Nanapoulos took 2-24 from 10 overs, again teaming with Mullaney as the Panthers’ first-change combination.

The Panthers played Frankston Peninsula at Shepley Oval yesterday to complete their weekend double-header of one-day matches. Play finished after the Journal went to print.

This Saturday the Panthers play North Melbourne at Junction Oval for day one of a two-day game starting at noon.
