Kats pull Cobras’ fangs

MIDDWAY Cobras Football Club has kicked off its season in style despite a loss to the Kardinia Kats in the RecLink league last week.
The Cobras, a club that allows disadvantaged people from the Greater Dandenong and Casey regions to play football at a competitive level, fielded a team of 14 players which put it at a disadvantage from the beginning, club president Don Cameron said.
But the passion and drive from its players saw the club bounce back from a devastating start to finish just a few goals behind the Kats at Shell Stadium, in Geelong.
“(The Cobras) were behind from the start when they could only put 14 players on the field including coach Gary Lambert and his dad, assistant coach Trevor Lambert, who is in his 60s,” Mr Cameron said.
“It was a tough encounter made harder when two injured Cobras players left the field and could not return.”
Mr Lambert praised his team’s performance and in particular the efforts of defender Andrew Cumming, who was awarded the Cobras’ player of the match.
“It was a great effort considering we only had 12 players against a full opposition side,” Mr Lambert said.
“Andrew was solid in defence all day, putting his body on the line and never giving up.”
The Cobras are now hoping to attract more people to the club.
