Don’t run the gauntlet

“YOU can run the gauntlet on Heatherton Road, but it’s just a case of when you’ll get picked up.”
This was the warning from Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts ahead of a series of operations during the Christmas and New Year period.
“We know that Heatherton Road is thoroughfare for drink-drivers,” he said.
“It’s a real risk road for us generally.
“Heatherton Road is going to be targeted in a big way.”
Operation Removal all impaired drivers (RAID) started last weekend and will run into early January, with more operations to follow.
Sen Sgt Roberts said in addition to Heatherton Road, his officers would target licensed premises.
“We’ll be out there in droves between now and the New Year,” he said.
“And speeding is a real focus for us because we know that in so many of our fatality and serious injury collisions, speed features prominently.
“It really makes a marked difference, particularly around areas with pedestrians.”
Sen Sgt Roberts said marked and unmarked police cars and booze buses would be involved.
“You never know when your number will come up,” he said.
