Open your heart and offer a room

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

FOSTER care volunteers are critically needed to house children and young people at risk of homelessness in Greater Dandenong, says the manager of a foster-care service.
Simone Carr, acting regional manager of Wesley Mission Victoria, said it was “heartbreaking” that it may not be able to place vulnerable young people in caring homes.
“Every day we are swamped with requests.
“Often children and young people find themselves sleeping in the lounge rooms of friends, acquaintances and extended family and being moved from place to place until appropriate accommodation can be found.”
She said children can’t live with their parents for a variety of reasons, such as physical or sexual abuse, parental substance abuse and mental health issues.
Ms Carr said a traumatised child may exhibit challenging behaviours but foster-carers are supported 24/7 and receive accredited training.
“You just need to have a spare room, a good heart, a willingness to make a positive difference in a child or young person’s life.”
A tax free financial reimbursement is also provided to carers to assist with costs.
To help, call Wesley Mission Victoria on 9794 3032.
