Round about way to safety

By CASEY NEILL

SAFETY improvements are on the cards for a dangerous Dandenong intersection.
Last month the Journal reported that Lamis Albyati frequently witnessed crashes at Scott and Thomas streets and was calling for lights – more than five years after the roundabout that previously controlled the intersection was removed.
City of Greater Dandenong acting engineering services director Oliver Vido at Monday night’s council meeting said a traffic engineering consultant was investigating designs for a splitter island on Thomas Street.
He said this would provide a refuge for pedestrians and provide a vehicle for additional traffic signage.
Mr Vido said the council would also get a new estimate for installing traffic signals, and had asked police to increase their presence.
He reitereated that an independent road safety audit found the intersection’s design complied with standards and was consistent with many others in the area.
“The independent observations of accidents have highlighted that these have been caused by drivers failing to comply with the road rules, not directly associated with the intersection design,” he said.
