Mayor’s welcome

CITY of Greater Dandenong mayor John Kelly is inviting all residents to join Australia Day celebrations taking place throughout the city this weekend.
The celebrations consist of a variety of entertainment to mark a special day in the Australian psyche.
Australia Day, 26 January, is an important date for all Australians, as on this day 220 years ago, the First Fleet under Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove and established the colony of New South Wales.
“Australia Day is not only a celebration of our grand history, it is a celebration of contemporary Australia,” Cr Kelly said.
“On this day we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian.
“It’s the day to reflect on what we have achieved and what we can be proud of as a nation.
“Council has a great line-up of events for all residents to come and enjoy this Saturday 26 January.”
Some of the Greater Dandenong celebrations include:
Feature Event – Australia Day in the Park
Slip, slop, slap and head down to Dandenong Park to enjoy the free concert with Australia Day Ambassador Dr Hass Dellal and world renowned jazz band, the Society Syncopators. Children’s rides, magicians and face painting will feature throughout the afternoon at Dandenong Park, corner of Pultney and Foster streets, Dandenong, from noon to 2.30pm.
Bunnings Sandown
Hearty breakfast, free sausage sizzle, children’s activities and performance by the Dandenong Band at Bunnings Sandown, 754 Princes Highway, Sandown, from 9.30am to 11am.
Australia Day Breakfast at Springers
Free sausage sizzle, activities and basketball demonstrations at Springers Leisure Centre, 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough, from 9am to noon.
Noble Park RSL
Spend a leisurely afternoon at your local RSL with free activities and entertainment at Noble Park RSL, 1128 Heatherton Road, Noble Park, from noon.
“The free events on 26 January are a great way to celebrate Australia Day,” Cr Kelly said.
“This day belongs to the people and is a great opportunity for the community to get to know each other a little better.”
