Saving time and money

– Shaun Inguanzo
DIRECT Mail and Marketing may be in the printing business but that doesn’t mean the company sees things in black and white.
The winner of this year’s Innovation Award has revolutionised the way it prints clients’ brochures, catalogues, pamphlets and other orders, cutting the original printing process from six steps to just three.
The main benefits of this system, which managing director Fred Humphrey has called the Direct On Line Imaging Sytem (DOLIS), are cost and time savings that are passed on to the client.
Mr Humphrey described DOLIS as a ‘world first’ and said the technology took a tough 24-month period to develop.
“And we’re still continuing with the refinement of it, and further advancements,” Mr Humphrey said.
Direct Mail and Marketing is located in Abbots Road, Dandenong South and has about 65 full-time employees and a bank of 40 casuals.
Aside from the printing game, the business provides a total management solution to meet a client’s entire marketing needs.
This includes print and mailing, email and e-marketing, and even telemarketing and SMS services.
Clients include the RSL, Tattersall’s and the City of Greater Dandenong.
The company has a strong approach to corporate and social responsibility and is a silver sponsor of the Make a Wish Foundation.
Mr Humphrey said that, despite a digital revolution in delivering information, printing was far from dead.
“Spam has helped the printing industry substantially,” he said, referring to the credibility of mailbox drops over bulk email.
Prior to learning of the company’s award, Mr Humphrey said that if it won, any award was due to the hard work of his staff.
“A lot of the credit goes to our diligent, hard working staff,” he said.
“We would be very proud, it would be a great achievement for all of the staff here.”
