Asbestos concerns in gutted house

FIREFIGHTERS are using ladder equipment to get a bird’s eye view of a Springvale home gutted by fire this afternoon.
A CFA spokeswoman said seven CFA and MFB crews brought the Albert Avenue blaze under control about 3.50pm but were checking the site for hot spots.
“They’ll keep on working to make sure everything is extinguished,” she said.
“They also found some traces of asbestos so they’re taking appropriate precautions to work through that safely.”
She said there was no sign that anyone was home when the fire broke out about 3.24pm and that all persons were accounted for.
“The fire started at the rear of the house and spread through the house,” she said.
“There is significant damage. It’s a single-storey weatherboard house.”
The CFA has advised people to avoid the area, and asked nearby residents to close doors and windows and switch off some air-conditioning.
Crews were expected to be at the scene for a further two hours.
