Christmas dumpers do the dirty

DANDENONG roads are among the worst hit by festive season dumpers.
VicRoads is urging people to do the right thing over the Christmas holiday period and dispose of rubbish and unwanted presents responsibly.
VicRoads metro south-east region director Aidan McGann said summer was peak dumping season and the most commonly dumped items included building rubble, bricks, glass, timber, car tyres, furniture and mattresses.
“The cost of disposing of waste dumped on roadsides across the metro south-east region is more than $100,000 a year,” he said.
“Among the roads most frequently targeted are the Monash Freeway, South Gippsland Highway and Princes Highway for illegal dumpers.”
Mr McGann said removing illegally dumped waste from public land redirected VicRoads resources from delivering other important services.
He said it was hazardous to VicRoads employees and the community and harmful to the environment.
Report illegal dumping to the EPA’s 24 hour pollution hotline on 1300 372 842.
