Crowds flock to Diwali

By Casey Neill

Greater Dandenong’s Indian community has flocked to Diwali celebrations.
The Somerfield estate in Keysborough South hosted activities to mark the ancient tradition known as the festival of lights on Saturday 5 November.
Dancers from Bindaas Bollywood performed by the lake dressed in colourful costumes, then taught a few steps to the kids and young at heart who’d watched their routine.
There were prizes for the best-dressed guests, Indian treats and sparklers.
The Hindu calendar determines the exact day of the festival, which this year was 30 October.
Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate Diwali for different reasons, but the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil is the common theme.
Lord Rama’s return from 14 years of exile is the most common story behind Diwali, the legend being that the people of Ayodhya lit candles to celebrate his return.
The five-day celebration includes food, fireworks, gifts, coloured sand, and special candles and lamps.
Indian Association Cardinia Casey hosted a Diwali festival in Dandenong’s Harmony Square earlier that day.
On Sunday 30 October, Dandenong Market hosted Bollywood dancers, musicians and food vendors.
