High praise for

GREATER Dandenong residents have been praised for their water saving efforts during the last year.
Permanent Water Saving Rules (PWSR), which only come into effect in times of major drought and differ from normal water restrictions, were introduced on 1 March last year.
South East Water managing director Dennis Cavagna said that since the rules were introduced there had been a considerable drop in notices issued for breaches in Greater Dandenong. Since water restrictions were introduced in September 2002, Dandenong (including Dandenong North and Dandenong South) recorded 245 breaches, yet only 23 of those were recorded since the Permanent Water Saving Rules were introduced.
Noble Park had 98 breaches overall and seven since PWRS, Springvale had nine out of 36, Springvale South five out of 79 and Keysborough eight out of 66.
“Permanent Water Saving Rules are part of a longterm approach to water conservation and are designed to change our everyday water behaviour,” Mr Cavagna said.
Mr Cavagna said it had been good to see residents taking steps to improve and reduce their water usage.
“When we notify customers of alleged breaches they often seek clarification of the rules and take steps to comply,” he said. “If the rules aren’t followed, penalties can apply.”

Manual watering systems can only be used between 8pm and 10am.
Automatic watering systems can only be used between 10pm and 10am. All new automatic watering systems must be fitted with a rain or soil moisture sensor, which prevent watering systems from operating when it is raining or when the soil is wet.
Handheld hoses must be fitted with trigger nozzles to water gardens and lawns as well as wash cars. Hosing down driveways, paths, concrete and paved areas is not permitted.
Residents must apply to their local water authority to fill a new pool or spa and must show where they will make savings around the home before proceeding.
