Latest on Alzheimer’s

By Shaun Inguanzo
GREATER Dandenong’s elderly population received a speech last week about the debilitating Alzheimer’s disease.
Hosted by the Dandenong RSL, Alzheimer’s Australia representative Dianne Winters spoke to a crowd of more than 60 people about the condition.
Dandenong RSL welfare committee chair John Filmer said he planned the speech after hearing Ms Winters speak at Anzac House last year.
“I thought it was that important for people (in Greater Dandenong) to have the same information passed onto them,” he said.
Mr Filmer said the speech captivated the audience, particularly because Alzheimer’s can affect anyone, with the likelihood increased over the age of 60.
“As soon as (Ms Winters) started speaking, or within five minutes, one resident there said her husband had a bad form of it, and had been like that for quite some years.
“What she had to cope with was he was calling her ‘mother’ – he didn’t recognise her.”
