Race to ruin

By Nicole Williams
Police received reports two cars, a silver Honda and a red sedan, were travelling east at high speed, on the Princes Highway towards Henty Street at 7.45pm immediately before the collision.
Police said the Honda collided with another car that was travelling north and attempting to turn right.
Both vehicles spun out of control and hit two light poles.
A 31-year-old driver received treatment and died at the scene and the 27-year-old driver of the Honda was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable but serious condition.
Police are appealing for the owner of the red car, a late 1990s Ford sedan with tinted windows, to contact Crime Stoppers.
Intensive care paramedic Greg Nicholls said the first crew was on the scene within six minutes and arrived to a chaotic scene.
“Paramedics removed the driver of one car. The passenger side of his vehicle was pushed in about a metre by the force of the impact,” Mr Nicholls said.
Intensive care paramedics treated him briefly but he died at the scene.
“The 27-year-old man who was driving the other car had a fractured arm and dislocated shoulder,” he said.
“It’s frustrating to be going to collisions like this which have such devastating consequences, knowing that the crash could have been prevented.”
Police are also investigating a serious collision in Keysborough at 9.20 Tuesday night.
Police believe a 33-year-old man was driving a Ford Falcon east on Cheltenham Road with its front right wheel on the rim.
The car struck another blue Ford Falcon travelling south on Kingsclere Avenue, causing it to run off the road and into a brick fence on Cheltenham Road.
The man sustained serious head injuries and a 51-year-old Narre Warren woman also suffered serious injuries.
Both were taken to The Alfred hospital.
Anyone with information about the accidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
