What’s in the box?

By Nicole Williams
GRANDMA’S Glory Box has been cracked open by the Springvale and District Historical Society.
The group has created an exhibition of clothing and textiles from the 1860s to the 1960s.
Society secretary Robyn Robie said the exhibition was very exciting. “Just to be able to see what Grandma and Great Grandma would have worn,” she said.
The exhibition displays women’s and children’s clothing, tea cosies and a table runner made to fit a 3.5 metre table.
Ms Robie said some highlights include the collars woman used to put around the dress neck, a ball gown which belonged to Lady Ivy Brookes, a beaded throw-over and baby dresses and bonnets.
The exhibition opening took place last week and was officially performed by City of Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades.
Ms Robie said most of the clothing was donated to the council and the council approached the historical society to store it.
Instead they decided to display it.
Grandma’s Glory Box will be open Wednesday to Fridays until 31 March at the Historical Society Rooms, 7 Hillcrest Grove, Springvale.
