Stars shine on

THE Southern Stars clocked up their fifth straight Division One win, coming from a goal down to beat North Geelong Warriors 3-1 at Elcho Park on Saturday.
Noel Fox put his team ahead in the 72nd minute, but it may have been a coaching decision by Stars boss Dean Hennessey, that proved the winner.
After being outgunned for the opening 20 minutes of the second half, Hennessey made a double substitution, bringing on Fox and Hassan Furuncu, who were critical in swinging the match the Stars’ way.
Within five minutes of entering the game, Furuncu sent a cross into the box that passed everyone except Fox who tapped in the winner with his first touch of the game.
The Stars’ streak appeared to have hit a wall inside the opening five minutes of the match when the Warriors’ Michael Boyer secured the opener.
But a timely volley by Chris Greechan in the 35th minute sparked life back into the contest.
North Geelong dominated possession in the second half but couldn’t find a way to score, and despite the heavy press, it was the Stars who made the most of their opportunities.
Desperate for some attack out of his side, Hennessey made the successful double substitution and the ensuing goal was a dagger to the Warriors who six minutes later conceded another goal.
Stars player Mark Leech latched onto a through-ball and tucked away the sealer in the 78th minute.
The Stars move to within one point of first place and are eyeing off the Western Suburbs for their sixth consecutive win.
Dandenong City has firmed as a Division Two threat after beating Heatherton 2-0 at Bosnia and Herzegovina Soccer Centre on Saturday.
Central striker Wayne Gordon put his side up in the first half with his third goal in four games before Tomi Razov sealed the deal in the second.
Noble Park bounced back from its 0-1 loss to South Springvale last week with a 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at Parkfield Reserve.
While South Springvale Aris’ inconsistent season continued when it went down 4-1 to Malvern City at Kooyong Reserve.
Over the opening six weeks, South Springvale has always backed up a win with a loss the following week, but Aris will be in a favourable position to return to the winners’ list when it plays Doncaster under lights tomorrow night.
