DANDENONG Thunder’s fairytale back-to-back State Knockout Cup aspirations fell at the final hurdle – beaten by the Green Gully Cavaliers 1-3 at Melbourne Knights Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Unable to stop the Cavaliers’ rampant run up forward, Andy Vargas slotted the first in the 39th minute, followed by the first of the match for Jason Hayne in the 57th – getting around the keeper from a Sean Harding cross.
Nate Foster, brought on early for Eric Frazier, slotted the Thunder’s only goal of the afternoon in the 78th minute.
A final nail in the coffin came through a Hayne penalty – pushing the Gully out to a two-goal victory.
Dandenong will shake off their grand final defeat on Saturday – hosting Port Melbourne Sharks to keep their Victorian Premier League finals hopes alive.
