A DANDENONG arson attack has prompted a fire season warning from police.
Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said witnesses from nearby smelt burning plastic just after midnight on Tuesday 8 December.
They called the CFA, and fire crews extinguished a bin fire outside 157 Lonsdale Street.
Firefighters deemed the cause suspicious, and police are investigating.
Det Sgt Kirton said the incident was a timely reminder that the high fire danger period was starting, and that residential, business and open areas could all come under threat.
He urged anyone who observed anything suspicious in relation to fires to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
“Community engagement is a large part of arson prevention and the community needs to work with police to reduce the risk of arson,” he said.
