Strike stalemate: Pay dispute not over as Dandenong employees return to work

By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

VOLGREN employees have ended their 24-hour strike action, but their industrial dispute with the Dandenong South bus-maker remains unresolved.

Workers returned to work after yesterday’s stopwork protest outside the company’s Hammond Road gates.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union vehicle division organiser Ashley Mayne said little progress was made in a four-hour negotiation between the union and Volgren managers yesterday.

He said Volgren failed to budge on its pay offer — which was an annual 3 per cent, 2.75 per cent and 2.75 per cent rise over the next three years — and for plans to scrap a $770 tools allowance.

Mr Mayne said further talks were scheduled for next Monday, followed by a four-hour stopwork and barbecue on Tuesday week to update workers on the negotiations.
