VPL: Cannons firing on all cylinders

By Roy Ward

OAKLEIGH Cannons secured a double chance in the Victorian Premier League finals with a 3-1 win over Bentleigh Greens in their final round match on Sunday.

The Cannons trailed 1-0 early in the match but goals from Hayden Doyle and Rasmus Festersen gave them the lead before Ricky Diaco’s late strike secured the win.

The Cannons will now face reigning champions Green Gully in the qualifying final at Jack Edwards Reserve this Sunday at 5pm.

The winner of that clash will face minor-premiers Dandenong Thunder in the major semi-final at George Andrews Reserve on either September 29 or 30.

Dandenong Thunder ended its regular season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Richmond on Sunday with Matt Theodore scoring for the Thunder.

The Greens’ loss has forced them into an elimination final against Northcote City with the two sides to face off at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex this Friday night at 7.30pm.
