A “BIG, beautiful, African Australian community” is John James’ vision.
And the Young African Connection (YAC) founder and CEO hopes an African Australian dinner in Dandenong this Saturday 16 February will be another step towards this dream.
He said the free event was an opportunity for families from the African Australian community to meet with politicians, police, community leaders and more, to share advice and gain knowledge.
Mr James said it would bring together leaders from different communities to help each other, and give children a chance to learn from elders and open an intergenerational dialogue.
“We need that legacy,” he said.
The alcohol-free evening will feature African food, awards, stories, music and more.
Mr James came to Australia seven years ago after growing up in Sudan and Uganda.
He founded YAC in 2010 to make it easier for young refugees to find support from other Africans who shared and understood their situation.
He wants to see young African people get more involved with the community they live in and develop social connections.
“Everything is all about the community,” he said.
“YAC is committed to fostering leadership, positive social connection and encouraging young people to become responsible members of their communities.”
Mr James has visions for future events to help the African Australian community grow. He needs financial support to make this happen and can be contacted on 0401 906 661.
