Time to bin it right

By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

RED, yellow and green bins are set to become the new language on rubbish collection nights in Greater Dandenong within the next 12 months.

That’s a green lid for garden and compost waste, yellow lid for recyclables and red lid for non-recyclable rubbish.

Cr John Kelly, who sits on Melbourne’s south-east regional waste board, says the colour change brings the council into line with national standards.

It also puts the council in step with a statewide campaign, ‘Get It Right on Bin Night’, based on the traffic light colours.

Cr Kelly has opted for a large yellow bin and small non-recyclable waste bin. There is expected to be price incentives to encourage other residents to ‘downsize’ their red bins.

“The service is geared towards a reduction in landfill waste, so it’s less of a problem for our grandchildren,” Cr Kelly said.

“I do think landfill is going to be a thing of the past with new waste technologies coming on board.”
