Free legal advice … and a movie

DANDENONG’S legal fraternity is coming together to celebrate World Day of Social Justice this Wednesday with a free event featuring free legal advice and a movie screening.

Hosted by the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre and supported by the Dandenong Magistrates Court, Victoria Legal Aid has invited local agencies and the wider community down to share information about the law, rights and other legal matters.

Dandenong managing lawyer Elissa Scott said the event was an ideal opportunity to come together with the diverse local community. “It’s about bringing together emerging and newly arrived people.”

Ms Scott said it was a good networking opportunity, as it was important to ensure local agencies and the community were well informed of the law and their rights.

Victoria Legal Aid helped more than 3000 people in Greater Dandenong with legal problems in the past year, with one in five of clients statewide from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

She said it was common for migrants to be unaware of certain laws. Legal problems could often stem from simple things like driving licences, traffic fines or management of debts and loans.

The event will include a free screening of Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, a movie about asylum seekers with scenes featuring Dandenong Market. A team of VLA lawyers will be available at the event to provide free advice.

The event is on this Wednesday from 4.30pm at the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, corner Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. Bookings essential to 9767 7111. Anyone with a legal problem can visit legalaid.vic.gov.au or call 9269 0120.
