Greater Dandenong ratepayers could be in for a rude shock when they open their rates notices next year.

Greater Dandenong Council anticipates rates rising by up to 20 per cent in 2013-14 if the state government forces councils to collect a fire services levy from next year.

The levy is charged on insurance premiums and the government plans to change the levy to a property-based charge, as recommended by the Bushfires Royal Commission.

A spokeswoman for Treasurer Kim Wells said the government was finalising the system, due to start in July next year.

Greater Dandenong corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the government should collect the levy. “We remain deeply concerned that we may have to

collect the fire services levy.”
